SUSTO is an American indie rock band based in Charleston, South Carolina. Founded in 2013 by lead singer and songwriter Justin Osborne, the band has seen various members over the years, but Osborne’s distinct voice and heartfelt songwriting remain central to their sound. The name “SUSTO” is derived from a Latin American term referring to a folk illness, often translated as “fright” or “sudden fear”, which can be brought about by a traumatic experience.

Musical Evolution and Highlights: SUSTO’s sound is a blend of indie rock with rootsy, Americana touches, colored by Osborne’s personal experiences, travels, and introspective lyrics. Their music often addresses themes like existential dread, relationships, and the search for meaning.

  1. Self-Titled Debut (2014): SUSTO’s self-titled debut album was released in 2014. With songs like “Acid Boys” and “Friends, Lovers, Ex-Lovers: Whatever”, it began to catch the attention of fans and critics alike.
  2. “& I’m Fine Today” (2017): This was perhaps the band’s breakthrough album. It showcased a broader palette of sounds, including electronic elements, and reflected on Osborne’s personal struggles and observations.
  3. “Ever Since I Lost My Mind” (2019): This release continued the band’s trajectory, with Osborne diving deep into his feelings, the concept of home, and the complexities of personal relationships.
